Teaching English Radio

Hello welcome to this month's Teaching English Radio programme!
This month's topic is ‘Managing Different Levels ’.

Teachers agree that multi-level classes can present a real challenge. Some students learn English in other places and so are far more proficient than some of the others. Many teachers use this to their advantage and pair stronger students with weaker ones. This can increase the confidence of the stronger ones, who have a sense of responsibility, and help ‘pull the weaker ones up’.Teachers helping each other and pooling resources can provide creative solutions to challenges in multi-level classes.
Today's guests in the studio were:Mrs Raoudha Belhaj Primary Teacher Trainer,Tunis, Mrs Sabiha Inoubli, Inspector, Bizerte,
Mrs Melek Jlejla,Secondary school teacher
and Jean Wilson,Vocational Training specialist.

In addition there were teachers and Teacher Inspectors in the 'Teaching English Radio Live Workshop '
at British Council Tunis :Toumi ,Dalel,Haifa and Raja.

In the post programme discussion Dalel mentioned that she had set up a Facebook page for her learners to make sure they could keep up with anything they missed in  class.

Jean Wilson, the Vocational Specialist: 'No longer the sage on the stage but the guide on the side'.

So be creative and adaptable with the fast finishers, extend the activity they are doing; in a discussion activity get the them to ask each other extra questions or use the students as a resource in being a 'mentor' with the weaker students and give them a sense of responsibility with helping you to help the other students.
Facilitate and monitor your students' learning. Good luck!

Saturday Night in Tunis

How do you spend your Saturday night?
Do you go to a disco or a karaoke?

Or go to a restaurant or a party?

Is Tunis an exciting place for a good Saturday night out?

Rim

There are different ways to spend a good Saturday night in Tunis. Some people prefer going to a disco, going to a restaurant, going to a hotel or simply staying at home.

Spending a perfect Saturday night, for me, is staying at home and doing nothing. Actually, after a whole week working, running here and there, speaking with clients, I wouldn't be able to face more noise even during the weekend. I prefer ordering some pizza with a fresh drink, staying in bed and watching a good movie.
However, sometimes I enjoy spending weekend with my best friends in a restaurant or a hotel, talking, laughing and making some noise.

In fact, the way i would spend a good Saturday night depdends on my humor. If I'm tired i prefer staying alone, but if I am okay i go out with friends.

Teaching English Radio is Back !

Series 3 of Teaching English Radio has kicked off!

Today's topic was 'Getting the most from the course book ' and among today's guests were Hada,Primary School Teacher Trainer,Latifa,Primary school teacher,Maaouia,Secondary Teacher and Inspector,Lamia ,University Professor and Teacher Inspector, Patric Fawcett,Teacher Trainer and ELT/ICT Coordinator at British Council Tunis.

Course books can provide an English teaching syllabus and give structure to a lesson as well as having
useful recyling and revision activities.

Not all the materials in a coursebook are relevant to the students so the teacher can adapt ideas from a book to use with their own materials.Teachers need not be independent on the coursebook and can try many different ways to present language and engage their students during the lesson.

At the beginning of the discussion the key points were:
that the course book can be used as a reference/record of the language items that have been taught,
and that it can be used as a source of inspiration for instance an interesting picture or topic in the course book to engage the students's interest.Maamouia said that the course books in Tunisia need to be updated and there are ongoing plans to resolve this issue.Lamia mentioned that she uses a lot of her own material for her university classes and that students' involvement is important.

The topic of fun and enjoyable activities are an important element of learning a language;Maamouia stated
' You cannot teach English with out fun!

The needs of the learner also need to be considered when using the coursebook and selecting the most relevant sections.

Re the question of what makes a good coursebook: Patric mentioned that his students at the British Coucil had told him that the most important sections were grammar and vocabalary whilst Maaouia and Hada said that ' a course book should be appealing to the learners and it also needs to be updated '.

Later on Patric emphasised the importance of the students having plenty of time to practice the language and mentioned that his young learners had done a poster on the topic of theme parks with a follow up activity of a poster presentation to their classmates; thus ensuring practice of speaking as well as their writing.

By the way here are some strategies to resolve some problems you might have with your course book:

When the task/exercise doesn't suit the learners' style ,change the interaction pattern eg. use a matching task as a mingling activity,
When the activities in the book always follow the same sequence, change the order of the material or
get the students have their books closed so that they focus on the lesson,
When the texts are too easy, get the students to make up their own questions and write an extension of the text and do a role play activity related to the people in the text

Presentastion at EXPOLUGHA Tunis 2013

EXPOLUGHA Tunis 2013
My presentation on the British Council Learn English web site was successful with at least  90 people attending;the audience participation was also very good. There was even a round of applause at the end and some people came up to me asking for more information about the  web site.
Quiet a few people were also interested in being able to do ESP courses ,for instance a medical English course, an engineering English course ; the most popular request was information on the IELTS exam.
My presentation was also screened 'live' on the big screen in the main auditorium which helped to get people to attend my  session.

Hi everybody,

Eid-al Adha or what we called festival of sacrifice is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. In the international calender, the dates are different from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year. The word "Eid" appears once in the 5th Sura of the Quran, with the meaning Solemn festival. The Eid is also known as the greater Eid, it  celebrates the occasion when God appeared to the prophet Ibrahim in his dream and asked him to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God.The devil tempted Ibrahim by saying he should disobey God and spare his son. As Ibrahim was about to kill his son, God stopped him and gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead . So, Muslims all over the world who can afford it ,sacrifice a sheep as a reminder of Ibrahim's obedience to God. In this special day, people generally share out the meat among family, friends and the poor who they get a third share.Added to that ,this day started with Muslims going to the Mosque for prayers to thank God for all the blessings they have received . It's also a time when they visit family and friends. What is more, it is obligatory to give a set amount to charity to help poor people in order that thoese people  celebrate the Eid too.
Now,I'm going to tell you what the Eid means to me. Actually, the Eid is an ordinary day like all the other days. Each year, I spent it in my room and never participate in it. For me , it is  an occasion  to study,to watch TV , and have some rest. Probably because I have never eaten meat in my whole life and i hate the fact that the house becomes full of bad smells .In fact,i know that I should participate in it and act like all the members of my family in order to depict a true Muslim. So, this year i'll try hard  to do my best to change my bad habit and to sahre this special day with my family.. I hope that I have given you a short glimpse about the Eid.

Eid el Adha

Hello , i'm Anwar and i write on the occasion of the Eid el Adha which is a great opportunity for us to gather and see our family and friends. It takes close for at least 3 days and most people go back to their hometowns and eat traditional Eid meals. We slaught it in order to help poor people who do not have the financial means to buy the sheep. Happy Eid for everyone , hope you will enjoy it.

I hate Eid , maybe because i don't eat meat , and hate animals , and i hate the smell of the grilled meat, and i hate the Eid , because our house become so crowded , i call the fact of killing sheeps , '' animal abuse '' ! simply i don't enjoy the Eid !

hello,

i'm Khalil, i'm young, wild and free ! i'm pain, i'm strong, but at times my strength is my weakness, i'm crazy and friendly ! i'm not perfect but if i was, i wouldn't be me. i'm a son that loves his mother and a brother that appreciates his sisters.

i'm confused, every part of my personality contradicts itself. i think i'm morbid but i'm happy. my favorite colour is black... and green ! i read a lot of books but i sleep in class and i hate school. i hate to follow any fad but i see myself as a sophisticated person ...

i want to leave this sick and strange society for a journey to seek the truth somewhere else than here. i want to feel connected to nature, i feel like nature is calling me !

i have a dream that one day all people live life in peace.

A Call for Teachers! Teaching English Radio 'World Teachers' Day'

Teaching English Radio RTCI kicked off series 3 with a special 'World Teachers' Day ' programme.
This year's slogan is 'A Call for Teachers! '

With this in mind, the discussion focused on teachers’ employability and in particular their certification – and recognition of it and teachers’ ability to apply for jobs both in their country of origin as well as abroad.
In addition to Nigel Bellingham, British Council Tunisia Country Director and Kiros Langston, English Projects Manager in the studio there were three Tunisian teachers.

When Nigel talked about his experience of having been a teacher he said that teaching ' is a lonely experience , you can be isolated and there is a need to be part of a network to exchange ideas'.

During the programme the vocational teacher trainer mentioned that two years ago she didn't have the opportunity for training nor to meet her colleagues to share and exchange ideas but recently through the British Council's Employability program she achieved TKT Certification.

One of the Tunisian teachers had done one year's training and said she'd learnt by doing things;on the theme of  'learning by doing something' Nigel emphasised the point of reflecting on what you have done otherwise a teacher could continue in the same way without not really learning.

Kiros talked about the CELTA and TKT courses which can be really beneficial in becoming a  teacher or
developing a teacher's career. The vocational teacher trainer who had done the TKT course found it helped her ' to enhance her students' learning ' and the  former Secondary teacher trainer said his colleague had found 'the CELTA course enriching '.

Last term at the British Council three of my students who did the TKT Preparation course, successfully obtained CELTA certification when they did the intensive course in June,in addition two of these teachers plus two teachers who did the TKT Preparation course successfully obtained jobs at schools in Turkey.

smily 2

hi every body
Money is important in us anyway. We are working so hard for to receive salary to have money.I’ve been hearing people saying.“It’s so hard to earn money!”or “I need to work overtime.”. So I asked my friends this question:Why Money is Important? Everything in modern society is based on money. As The saying goes, money makes the world go around. Many young people marry for money rather than love
Money is not the most important thing in life. Yes, you need money for everything, but without love money has no value. Without love no one would be wealthy or prosperous or have a job. Without the love of God we are nothing. God is the most important thing in life. We need God who supplies all of our needs in order to survive and breath and make it in this cruel old world.

Thank you Haythem and Saba for the latest posts!

Haythem:Thanks for the interesting information and photos about Ramadan;now I know much more about Ramadan! It seems to me that's it a very family orientated event with lots of reflection and helping the less fortunate.

Saba and Smiley 2!: Thanks for your opinions on the topic on whether money can make you happy.

Have a good weekend everybody!

Patric

Haythem Ben Rhouma :)

As we know all it's Ramadan, by this occasion I will give you an idea about this special month :)

Well, Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It's the third pillar of islam . A period of time when muslims are facing a new challenge which is fasting during the daylight hours . Ramadan is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control .

As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and thirst, thinking about those in the world who have little to eat every day and appreciation for all of God's bounties. Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits . Ramadan is also a time of giving charity, reading of the Qur'an,  purifying one's behaviour, and doing good deeds. Muslims develop feelings of generosity and good-will toward others. The Prophet Muhammad  once said, "A man's wealth is never diminished by charity."

Since Ramadan is a special time, Muslims in many parts of the world prepare certain favourite foods during this month. :D

Saba :)

Hi everybody !
So this is my second post . It answers to this question " Can money make you happy ? "

Well !
We all know that money is an important thing in our lifes and especially nowadays . It makes our lifes easier and more comfortable , so you are no longer  moneyless , poor or needy , you can buy all of the things that you never had , but not happiness .
Unfortunately , so money people think that money can make them happy and all they need in this life is MONEY but  I really don't agree with them .
I deeply believe that with money we can buy a lot of things " a car , a house , an Iphone .." but not everything . Money can't buy our happiness , can't buy love and can't buy true friends . Money is really not a priority in our lifes .

I hope you'll enjoy reading my new post ! Goodbye ! :)
